DESCRIPTION
Through tunnels and trenches: exploring Monte Cengio and Forte Corbin.
Geographic location
Monte Cengio, standing at an altitude of 1,354 meters, is located in Veneto, in the province of Vicenza, at the southwestern edge of the Altopiano dei Sette Comuni (Plateau of the Seven Municipalities). Overlooking the Val d’Astico, this fascinating place is renowned for its extraordinary natural beauty and profound historical significance related to World War I, so much so that it is considered a Sacred Area of the Homeland.
Hike
The circular hike of Monte Cengio offers an exciting journey through history and nature, ideal for trekking and culture enthusiasts. Starting from Piazzale Principe di Piemonte (altitude 1,286 m), the itinerary winds through trenches, rock-carved tunnels, and spectacular viewpoints over the Val d’Astico.
The famous Granatiera Mule Track, built by military engineers in honor of the Sardinian Grenadiers, follows the mountain’s natural ledges, offering a unique walking experience suspended in time.
After reaching the summit with its commemorative cross and altar dedicated to the fallen, the path continues toward Forte Corbin. Built between 1906 and 1914 on a rocky spur, the fort is an open-air museum. Here, visitors can explore the fortifications, a museum displaying artifacts and period photographs, and relax in the well-maintained park. For those seeking a break, the fort's bar serves hot meals without requiring a reservation.
The entire route is approximately 13.5 km long, with an elevation gain of 650 meters, and takes about 5 hours to complete. It is accessible to less experienced hikers, provided they are equipped with flashlights for the darker tunnels and proper footwear.
Special thanks to Pierluigi Quagli of CAI Dueville in Vicenza for recommending the route.
History
Monte Cengio was the site of a major battle in 1916 during the Austro-Hungarian Strafexpedition. The Sardinian Grenadiers distinguished themselves in heroic resistance, sacrificing their lives to defend the plateau and halt the enemy's advance toward the Venetian plain. Over 10,000 soldiers were killed or injured in this brutal conflict, which ended with the Austro-Hungarian withdrawal thanks to the Russian counteroffensive on the Eastern Front.
Forte Corbin, designed as a strategic defense of the Val d’Astico, played no central role during the conflict but was briefly occupied by Austro-Hungarian forces. Today, thanks to careful restoration, it is one of the best-preserved sites in the area, offering visitors an authentic glimpse into military life during that time.
ITINERARY
From Piazzale Principe di Piemonte (1,286 m), take the dirt road “La Granatiera” and follow trail marker 651 toward Monte Cengio.
The path develops along the southwestern side of the mountain massif, carved for long stretches into solid rock and, in some sections, using tunnels. This mule track was designed to provide protected access to the summit area from Austrian artillery fire.
Arriving at Piazzale dei Granatieri (1,275 m), you can stop at the Rifugio al Granatiere mountain hut and visit the small Granatieri di Sardegna Memorial Chapel. Continue on trail 651 and, after crossing another imposing military work, the Command Tunnel, emerge at Piazzale Pennella (1,310 m), offering views of the entire central basin of the Altopiano di Asiago. Ascend to the summit of Monte Cengio (1,354 m). Retrace your steps to the last junction and take trail marker 643. After about 5 km, you’ll reach Forte Corbin (1,080 m). Return via Passo della Sgreva (1,190 m) and Rifugio al Granatiere.
