DESCRIPTION
Discover the Crown of Garda Trentino along ancient roads and medieval villages.
Geographic location
We are in Alto Garda Trentino, in the characteristic area called “Busa.” This term, in the local dialect, means hole and describes the unique shape of the Garda Trentino valley, a plain located between Arco and Riva del Garda, nestled among high mountain peaks that create a unique and fascinating environment.
Hike
The Garda Trek Crown of Garda Trentino route, inaugurated on April 9, 2017, offers hikers three circular options of increasing difficulty. The first two circuits unfold in the valley and mid-levels, while the third ventures into the higher altitudes, offering a true experience between earth and sky.
In this description, we focus on the second stage of the Garda Trek Low, an itinerary that starts from Arco, passes through the Bosco Caproni, descends to Bolognano, continues through Nago and Torbole, and finally reaches Riva del Garda along the scenic lakefront. This route follows the eastern side of the “Busa” and offers a walk through ancient mule tracks, paths, and secondary roads, all well-marked and accessible to everyone.
This itinerary is ideal for those seeking a pleasant, not overly challenging walk that allows immersion in the surrounding nature and the discovery of the rich cultural heritage of the region. Along the way, you can admire small medieval villages, vineyards, centuries-old olive groves, and hidden little churches between the hills. The route is accessible in all seasons, offering enchanting landscapes even during the clearest winter days, with holm oak forests, olive groves, and imposing castles dominating the panorama.
History
One of the most fascinating points of the second stage of the Garda Trek Low is the descent from Vastrè to San Martino, which crosses the picturesque Bosco Caproni. In the past, this area was home to oolite quarries, a valuable stone widely used in construction and decorative sculpture. Today, the old quarries have become rock climbing walls, frequented by climbers from all over the world. Bosco Caproni is named after the family of Gianni Caproni, an aviation pioneer born in Arco in 1886. Gianni Caproni is famous for founding one of the first Italian aeronautical companies, which played a key role during World War I.
Another historically significant element is the Strada di Santa Lucia, which connects Nago to Torbole. This ancient Roman road was the scene of an extraordinary feat in the 15th century when the Venetians, during a war against the Duchy of Milan, transported their ships overland, descending from the mountains to Lake Garda. This event represents one of the greatest logistical and strategic achievements of the time, showcasing the ingenuity and courage of the Venetians in military affairs.
This itinerary offers a unique opportunity for hikers to walk through history and nature, not only admiring the landscapes but also reliving historical events that shaped the culture and identity of the region.
