DESCRIPTION
A challenging hike in the heart of the Sesto Dolomites.
Geographical Location
Monte Rudo (Rautkofel), standing at 2,826 meters, is one of the main peaks of the Sesto Dolomites, located east of Val di Landro in the municipality of Dobbiaco (South Tyrol). Part of the Sesto Dolomites Natural Park, the massif includes several summits: Teston di Rudo (2,607 m), Monte Rudo Ovest (2,737 m), Monte Rudo di Mezzo (2,608 m), and Monte Rudo Grande (2,826 m). The area is renowned for its spectacular landscapes and historical significance.
Hike
Access to Monte Rudo begins at the Landro Fortress, following an old military mule track now reduced to a narrow, winding trail. The initial section is relatively easy, passing remnants of military outposts and a former cable car terminal. The second section is much more demanding: a narrow path traverses crumbling, exposed slopes, requiring experience, caution, and good navigation skills. Small cairns guide hikers along the way.
Once at higher altitudes, the view opens up to iconic peaks such as the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Monte Paterno, Croda dei Toni, and the lakes of Landro and Misurina. The final stretch, a mix of scree and rocky outcrops, leads to the summit of Teston di Monte Rudo, marked by a wooden cross.
Difficulty: suitable only for experienced hikers.
History
Monte Rudo served as an important strategic stronghold during World War I. Positioned behind Monte Piana, a site of fierce battles, its ridge was fortified with Austrian casemates and gun emplacements to defend the area and visually dominate the surrounding peaks. On May 24, 1915, the first cannon shot in the Dolomite sector of the war was fired from Monte Rudo.
Today, Monte Rudo preserves the traces of that historical period, offering an experience that blends unspoiled nature with historical memory. Along the route, remnants of fortifications and barracks tell the story of the soldiers who guarded these peaks.
ITINERARY
From the parking area (1,392 m) near the Landro Fortress (1,400 m), follow an unmarked mule track that zigzags through the forest. After an initial climb, you reach the first terminal of the old cable car (2,175 m), where remnants of military fortifications are visible. From here, continue along the trail or faint traces of it, guided by stone cairns, to the second cable car terminal (2,511 m), where more historical evidence can be found. At this point, turn left to tackle the final stretch toward Teston di Monte Rudo (2,607 m). The return follows the same route.
