DESCRIPTION
Among chestnut groves and medieval churches: an autumn hike on the Chestnut Trail.
Geographical Location
The second leg of the Chestnut Trail leads hikers from Auna di Sotto to Barbiano, ranging from 750 to 950 meters in altitude along the right side of the Isarco Valley. This route winds through a diverse and rich landscape typical of South Tyrol.
Hike
During this stage, the path immerses hikers in captivating nature, with vineyards, apple orchards, chestnut groves, and forests alternating with open meadows and unique formations like the earth pyramids. Points of historical and cultural interest include the evocative Ruins of Castel Pietra, the churches of Sant'Andrea and Santa Verena, and the scenic Barbiano Bridge.
The Chestnut Trail also offers an opportunity to savor local traditions. Hiking it between September and early November, during the Törggelen season, is a special experience: this is the time when inns and farm cellars open their doors to celebrate the harvest and local products, with a focus on chestnuts and fine wine.
The trail is accessible to everyone without particular difficulties: one-third of the route is paved, while the remaining two-thirds consist of well-marked paths and mule tracks. For a more convenient return, it is advisable to use two cars, leaving one in Barbiano; alternatively, public transportation connects the start and end points.
History
The Church of Sant'Andrea, located on a scenic hill, dates back to the 14th century. Inside, a fresco cycle discovered in 1995 depicts St. Christopher and other representations of St. Margaret and the saints Nicholas, Stephen, and Lawrence, offering insight into the religious devotion of the era.
A little further on, the Church of Santa Verena reflects an even older history, dating back to the 13th century. First mentioned in 1256, this church has undergone several transformations over the centuries: the bell tower was erected around 1400, while the main building was renovated first in the late Gothic style in 1460, and then again between the 17th and 18th centuries, incorporating parts of the original walls.
